PMP Exam Questions in 2026: How Many and What Formats?
The 2026 PMP exam has 180 questions and a four-hour limit. The outline also describes different response formats, so practice should go beyond memorizing one multiple-choice pattern.
The 2026 PMP exam has 180 questions and 240 minutes of testing time. PMI's updated exam information also lists two 10-minute breaks. If you are preparing with the new outline, question practice should include more than recognizing familiar keywords: you need to understand the situation, choose a response, and stay comfortable with the formats PMI describes.
What the current exam outline says
The 2026 Examination Content Outline divides the exam across three domains:
| Domain | Weight in the outline |
|---|---|
| People | 33% |
| Process | 41% |
| Business Environment | 26% |
PMI describes exam scenarios involving areas such as outcomes, value, AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement. These are topic contexts, not a promise that any single test form will use a particular mix of examples.
The outline includes standard selected-response items and newer interactions. For computer-based testing, its examples include matching items and pull-down lists. Read the current outline itself for the full description rather than relying on a training provider's summary of the previous exam.
How to practise without guessing the real questions
Do not make your plan depend on finding a copied question that might appear on test day. Use practice to strengthen the decisions the outline asks you to make:
- Read the full situation. Note the goal, the constraint, who is affected, and what has already happened.
- Identify the decision being tested. Is the question about leadership, delivery, risk, value, governance or another part of the current outline?
- Compare the responses. Explain why the best option addresses the situation now, and why another plausible option is weaker or premature.
- Review the miss. Record whether you missed a concept, overlooked a detail, or rushed the decision.
- Practise different interactions. Include matching and pull-down formats if your computer-based practice provides them; do not assume every exam question uses the same interaction.
For timing, 240 minutes across 180 questions gives an overall average of 80 seconds per question before accounting for the two scheduled breaks. Treat that as a planning calculation, not PMI's required pace for every item. During practice, notice which questions take longer and learn when to move on.
Make your practice match the 2026 outline
Use PMI's current outline as your coverage checklist. Track practice by domain, review reasoning after each session, then use a timed set to see whether your attention holds for longer. A single mock score cannot tell you exactly how you will perform on the live exam, but your repeated errors can show what deserves another study session.
Examova's PMP study and practice tools give you another place to work through questions and review your study areas. Keep PMI's outline beside any prep resource you use.
