How CIPS L4M1 and L4M8 Essay Answers Are Graded, and How to Get Feedback Before Exam Day

CIPS grades L4M1 and L4M8 at 50/60/75% and gives no individual feedback beyond the performance report. What its own guide says loses marks, and how to get feedback before exam day.

CIPS grades Level 4 constructed-response exams on a percentage scale: 50% is a Pass, 60% a Merit and 75% a Distinction. CIPS says that, because of the number of candidates, it cannot give individual feedback beyond the performance report, so the feedback you get before exam day is the feedback you arrange yourself.

That is the gap this article is about. Below is what CIPS has actually published about how answers lose and earn marks, and a practical way to get feedback on your own writing.

Five ways answers lose marks, from CIPS's own guide

CIPS lists these in its guide for CR candidates. Each one is something you can check in your own practice answer.

  1. Answering a wider question than the one asked. If a question is about environmental risks, material on social or governance risks earns nothing.
  2. Giving more than the number requested. Examiners only mark the number of points or examples asked for.
  3. Listing instead of explaining. For explain, "a simple list or outline of the risks is not enough." For analyse, a basic outline is "likely to be a fail."
  4. Not applying to the case. Where there is a case study, CIPS expects your answer to link to it; without one, use examples from industry or your own organisation.
  5. Running out of time on the last question. CIPS says the final question is often answered least well, and that weak time on one question may cause an overall fail unless the others are exceptionally strong.

The command word sets the depth. Our guide to CIPS command words covers how to answer each one.

Why "I wrote a lot" is not feedback

CIPS's guide opens with a question candidates often ask: I didn't pass, and I don't understand why, because I wrote a lot. Length is not the measure. Relevance to the exact question, the depth the command word demands and application to the scenario are.

The hard part is seeing that in your own writing. Re-reading an answer you have just written rarely shows what is missing, because you remember what you meant.

A feedback loop you can run every week

  1. Write one full answer under time. About 45 minutes per question is an even split of three hours.
  2. Compare with guidance, point by point. Did you cover what a strong answer covers? Did you go beyond the number asked?
  3. Check every paragraph against the command word. Reason given? Scenario named? Relationship shown?
  4. Get a second view. A study partner, a tutor, or a feedback tool. Ask one question: what would make this answer stronger?
  5. Rewrite the weakest paragraph and move on to a new question. Rewriting one paragraph well beats re-reading ten.

How Examova's Essay Practice fits this loop

Essay Practice is part of Pro for L4M1 and L4M8:

  • Exam-style workspace. Scenario and question beside your answer, a word count, and a full 3-hour countdown or a shorter practice timer.
  • Saves as you type. Refresh or take a break and pick up where you left off.
  • After you submit: model-answer guidance, a self-review checklist of what a strong answer covers, and AI answer feedback on what to develop.

The checklist is for your own reflection and the feedback is practice guidance. Neither is a mark, a CIPS grade or a prediction of your result. What they do give you is a second view on every practice answer before you sit the exam. CIPS itself says it cannot give individual feedback beyond the performance report.
