Why L4M1 Needs a Different Study Method

CIPS's published 2025 results show that L4M1 had the lowest average pass rate among Level 4 modules that year. It is also one of two Level 4 modules assessed through constructed responses rather than objective-response questions. That changes how you should prepare: knowing the concepts is not enough; you also need to plan, apply, and explain them clearly.

Key challenge: L4M1 is assessed by a 3-hour constructed-response exam, not objective response. Preparation therefore needs planned writing and application, not recall alone.

How to Write a Constructed-Response Answer

1. Read the Command Word

The command word tells you what the examiner expects. CIPS publishes its own list and tags each word by level:

• Describe (typically L4) = key characteristics plus the potential impact on the situation
• Explain (L4, L5) = reasons why and/or how, with evidence or examples, applied to the situation
• Identify / Outline (L4, part questions) = itemise; or briefly set out the main features
• Analyse (all levels) = examine the elements in detail and how they relate
• Propose (all levels) = suggest the most appropriate approach for the situation
• Calculate (all levels) = work out a value such as cost or quantity

2. Plan Before Writing (5-10 minutes)

Don't start writing immediately. Spend 5-10 minutes planning:

• Identify what the question asks (command word + topic)
• List 3-4 key points you'll make
• Allocate time to each section
• Link each point to the scenario

3. Use the P.E.E. Structure

For each paragraph:

• Point: State your argument clearly
• Evidence: Support with theory, models, or examples
• Explain: Show why this matters / link to the scenario

4. Always Link to the Scenario

Relevant application is stronger than generic theory. Build responses that:

• Reference specific details from the scenario
• Apply models to the organisation described
• Make recommendations relevant to their situation
