Memorising Answers vs Practising Reasoning: How to Choose Exam Prep for CIPS, PMP and PRINCE2

What the CIPS, PMP and PRINCE2 exams actually test, why recall alone runs out, and an eight-point checklist for judging any prep resource, including ours.

If your exam asks you to apply ideas to a situation, your preparation has to train that skill, and a list of questions with answers to memorise trains only recall. The issuers say this plainly: PMI describes PMP questions as scenario-based, and CIPS says a simple list is not enough in its written exams. The useful question is not "how many questions does this resource have?" but "does it teach me to get a new question right?"

This guide gives you a checklist you can apply to any prep resource, including ours.

What the exams actually test

ExamWhat the issuer saysWhat that means for practice
PMP (2026 ECO)Candidates apply concepts and experience to on-the-job situations "through a series of scenario-based questions"; 180 questions in 240 minutes, including case-study itemsPractise choosing the best action in a scenario, under time
CIPS Level 4, written modules (L4M1, L4M8)Answers are constructed in essay or case-study style; for explain, "a simple list or outline… is not enough"Practise writing applied answers to the command word
CIPS Level 4, objective modules (L4M2–L4M7)60 questions in 90 minutes, 70% to pass; questions are based on the syllabusPractise close distinctions across every learning outcome, under time
PRINCE2 7 Foundation60 questions in 60 minutes, closed book, 60% to pass; Bloom's levels 1 and 2 (knowledge and comprehension)Practise recall and understanding of how terms relate

Why recall alone runs out

A memorised answer works when the exam shows you the same wording. When the scenario changes one detail (a different stakeholder, a later project stage, a public-sector buyer instead of a private one), the right answer can change with it. Practice that makes you explain why an option is right is what carries over to a question you have never seen.

That does not make question volume useless. More questions give you more chances to meet a concept. They help most when every one is followed by a reason you can check.

The checklist: eight questions to ask any prep resource

  1. Is it built on the current outline? PMP: the 2026 ECO. CIPS: the 2024–2028 syllabus. PRINCE2: version 7. Check the resource names it.
  2. Does every answer come with an explanation, including why the other options are wrong?
  3. Can you practise under the real time limit? 240 minutes for PMP, 90 for CIPS objective modules, 3 hours for CIPS written modules, 60 for PRINCE2 Foundation.
  4. Does it keep track of what you got wrong and bring it back, so weak spots get retested rather than forgotten?
  5. For written exams, can you write an answer and get feedback on it, not just read a model answer?
  6. Can you filter by domain or module to fix one weakness at a time?
  7. Does it avoid promises it cannot keep? No issuer publishes a pass guarantee, and PMI publishes no fixed PMP pass mark. Be cautious of anyone who quotes one.
  8. Can you try it before paying, without handing over a card?
